I recently bought the Autonomous SmartDesk DIY kit to convert my existing desk tabletop into an automated sit standing desk. The hope being that it will help joint pain that I’ve been having the past few months. Specifically in my knees. Damn you, knees.
Because I already have a tabletop that I love (it’s wide enough to accommodate two laptops and two external monitors), I knew I didn’t need a full standing desk and only the base.
And so, the search began.
After a lot of research the most reasonably priced base, that could accommodate both the width and depth of my existing tabletop, I found was the Autonomous SmartDesk DIY Kit.
So I ordered it.
The problem now was, would I be able to get the box up several flights of stairs once it was delivered and would I be able to set it up myself?
The weight of the base + the weight of the tabletop is about 140 pounds total, and from everything I knew, putting the desk together required that you place the tabletop on the ground, screw the base to it and flip the entire 140 pound monster over. I already knew that wasn’t something I’d be able to do on my own.
But I was determined to do this alone. I’m still in quarantine, and did not want to have to ask someone over to help me, even with masks on.
So I came up with a plan to put the base together, and then screw the top on in reverse of the directions and every assembly video I’ve seen online.
But would it work?
Spoiler.
It worked.
I did it by myself.
I now have my standing desk. We’re standing. We’re sitting. We’re getting stuff done.
If you’d like to see the actual assembly in action, I did film it. You’re welcome.
